About the event

Roots & Rhythms Empowerment Gala for Black Mutual Aid

Join us for an unforgettable evening at the Roots & Rhythms Empowerment Gala for Black Mutual Aid

This in-person event will take place on Sun, Feb 25, 2024 at 30 Harvey Rd. Get ready to immerse yourself in a celebration of culture, unity, and empowerment.

Featuring performances by talented artists and speakers, this gala aims to uplift and support the Black community.

By attending this event, you contribute to the growth of a Black Mutual Aid Fund here in this province. Black Mutual Aid Funds are quite common in other jurisdictions across Turtle Island, commonly known as North America. It's time we here in Ktaqmkuk (aka Newfoundland) get on board! Mutual Aid Funds are a financial pot that can be drawn from to help people when they need it. There’s no judgment, there’s no red tape, there’s only support and meeting people where they are and helping them get what they need. No chairity - just solidarity! Together, we can create positive change and strengthen our community bonds.

Black people in this province have yet to have a NON REPAYABLE specific community fund that is sustainable year round, so that is our goal. The purpose is to foster a financial support system that will alleviate some financial barriers faced by Black individuals and community members. It is also intended to directly support any initiative/amplify concerns of the Black community across the province.

Roots and Rhythms: Empowerment Gala for Black Mutual Aid is a starting point to build this pot of funds. It is our hope that you will join us on February 25th to start to make this dream a reality.

Don't miss out on this inspiring evening of celebration and empowerment.

Mark your calendars for Sunday Feb 25 and join us at the Roots & Rhythms Empowerment Gala for Black Mutual Aid!

We respectfully acknowledge the land on which we gather as the ancestral homelands of the Beothuk, whose culture has been lost forever and can never be recovered. We also acknowledge the island of Ktaqmkuk (Newfoundland) as the unceded, traditional territory of the Beothuk and the Mi'kmaq. And we acknowledge Labrador as the traditional and ancestral homelands of the Innu of Nitassinan, Inuit of Nunatsiavut, and Inuit of NunatuKavut. We recognize all First Peoples who were here before us, those who live with us now, and the seven generations to come. As First Peoples have done since time immemorial, we strive to be responsible stewards of the land and to respect the cultures, ceremonies, and traditions of all who call it home. As we open our hearts and minds to the past, we commit ourselves to working in a spirit of truth and reconciliation to make a better future for all.
